The UK is a leader on global health, and I welcome the Secretary of State for International Development's announcement that the UK will step up efforts to end preventable deaths of mothers, new-born babies and children in the developing world by 2030.
Every day, over 800 women lose their lives from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth and around 7,000 new-born babies die. The majority of these deaths are in the developing world and are preventable. Significant progress has been made to reduce these unnecessary deaths over the last 30 years. But we still fall short of a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every child lives a healthy life.
Gavi's mission to save children’s lives by increasing equitable use of vaccines is directly aligned to the UK’s ambition, under Sustainable Development Goal 3, to end preventable deaths of new-born babies and children. The UK is the largest donor to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, committing £1.44 billion between 2016 and 2020. This support will vaccinate 76 million additional children by 2020, saving 1.4 million lives from vaccine-preventable diseases in 68 of the world’s poorest countries. The UK will host the pledging conference for Gavi in June 2020.
DFID support to Gavi includes a wider package of health care support designed to strengthen and integrate services. Immunisation is often a child’s first point of contact with their health service. It creates an opportunity where malnourished children can be identified and treated. Vaccines can also prevent some of the infectious diseases and causes of malnutrition.
Mae’r DU yn arweinydd byd-eang o ran iechyd ac rydw i’n croesawu cyhoeddiad yr Ysgrifennydd Gwladol dros Ddatblygu Rhyngwladol bod y DU yn bwriadu cymryd camau pellach i leihau marwolaethau y mae modd eu hatal ymysg mamau, babanod a phlant yn y byd datblygedig erbyn 2030.
Bob dydd, mae dros 800 o fenywod yn colli eu bywydau o ganlyniad i faterion sy’n ymwneud â beichiogrwydd a geni plant ac mae tua 7,000 o fabanod newydd-anedig yn marw. Mae mwyafrif y marwolaethau hyn yn digwydd mewn gwledydd datblygol ac mae modd eu hatal. Mae cynnydd sylweddol wedi cael ei wneud i leihau nifer y marwolaethau diangen hyn dros y 30 mlynedd diwethaf. Ond rydyn ni’n dal yn methu cyrraedd y nod o gael byd lle mae pob beichiogrwydd yn cael ei gofleidio, pob genedigaeth yn ddiogel a phob plentyn yn byw bywyd iach.
Mae cenhadaeth Gavi – sef achub bywydau plant drwy gynyddu defnydd ecwitïol brechlynnau – yn cyd-fynd yn uniongyrchol ag uchelgais y DU, o dan Nod 3 Datblygiad Cynaliadwy, i roi diwedd ar farwolaethau y mae modd eu hatal ymysg babanod newydd-anedig a phlant. Y DU yw prif noddwr Gavi, y Gynghrair Brechlynnau, ac mae wedi cyfrannu £1.44 biliwn rhwng 2016 a 2020. Bydd y cymorth hwn yn brechu 76 miliwn o blant ychwanegol erbyn 2020, gan arbed 1.4 miliwn o fywydau rhag clefydau y mae modd eu hatal â brechlyn yn 68 o wledydd tlotaf y byd. Bydd y DU yn cynnal cynhadledd i godi arian ar gyfer Gavi ym mis Mehefin 2020.
Mae’r gefnogaeth mae’r Adran dros Ddatblygu Rhyngwladol yn ei rhoi i Gavi yn cynnwys pecyn ehangach o gymorth gofal iechyd sydd wedi’i ddylunio i gryfhau ac integreiddio gwasanaethau. Imiwneiddio yw cyswllt cyntaf plentyn â’i wasanaeth iechyd yn aml. Mae’n gyfle i adnabod a thrin plant sydd heb gael digon o faeth. Gall brechlynnau hefyd atal clefydau heintus a’r hyn sy’n achosi diffyg maeth.
