Last week the digital marketing company Yell Business published a report that revealed Llandudno is the start-up capital of the United Kingdom. During 2021 more businesses formed in the town per capita than anywhere else throughout the UK.
Highlighting the report during a debate in Parliament on Tuesday, Aberconwy MP Robin Millar said:
“Last September, Llandudno in Aberconwy was identified as having the fastest economic recovery in the UK and, last week, an analysis of Companies House filings identified it as the start-up capital of the UK. I pay tribute to the entrepreneurs and businesses for making that happen. Will my hon. Friend the Minister join me in Llandudno with some of those entrepreneurs to see how we can nurture those green shoots, secure the growth and turn Llandudno into a growth and enterprise hub for north Wales?”
Responding positively, George Freeman MP, the UK Government Minister for Science, Research and Innovation of the United Kingdom, said:
“With pleasure. My hon. Friend makes an important point: the Welsh dragon is roaring not just on the rugby pitch and in tourism, where Llandudno is the queen of Welsh resorts, but in the science, research and innovation economy. With the north Wales energy corridor, the south Wales life sciences cluster and plant health at Aberystwyth, Wales is a science and innovation engine that we intend to support. I pay tribute to his work in the area and look forward to visiting the Llandudno cluster as part of our work on supporting clusters around the UK.”
Following the debate, Robin said:
“I welcome this report but its findings will not be a surprise to anyone who is familiar with the entrepreneurial dynamism of Llandudno and, of course, that of communities throughout Aberconwy.”
Continuing, Robin said:
“Throughout the pandemic the UK Government has provided unprecedented levels of financial support to businesses to manage their response to Covid-19. Tourism and hospitality, sectors that have been severely impacted by the pandemic, are central to our local economy so the UK Government’s financial support has been particularly important to us here in Aberconwy. I will always wholeheartedly support the north Wales tourism industry but in the aftermath of the pandemic it is clear that to strengthen our local economy we must leverage our strengths in tourism and also diversify with complementary sectors that bring new high skilled and well-paid jobs.”
Finishing, Robin said:
“We have a superb quality of life offer to attract hi-tech and other innovators. I am determined to bring improved high speed broadband access to Llandudno and to communities throughout Aberconwy to enable the technology that everyone from hospitality to web services needs. I look forward to working with the UK Government and with businesses and stakeholders to fully unlock our entrepreneurial potential and to bring more high skilled, well paid jobs to Aberconwy.
AS yn galw am gymorth ariannol ychwanegol gan Lywodraeth y DU i ddod â mwy o swyddi sgiliau uwch i Aberconwy
Wythnos diwethaf, cyhoeddodd cwmni marchnata digidol Yell Business adroddiad a oedd yn datgelu mai Llandudno yw’r brif ddinas ar gyfer cychwyn busnes yn y DU. Yn ystod 2021, ffurfiwyd mwy o fusnesau yn y dref y pen nag unrhyw le arall ar draws y DU.
Wrth dynnu sylw at yr adroddiad yn ystod dadl yn y Senedd ddydd Mawrth, nododd AS Aberconwy, Robin Millar:
“Fis Medi diwethaf, nodwyd mai Llandudno yn Aberconwy oedd â’r adferiad economaidd cyflymaf yn y DU, a’r wythnos diwethaf nodwyd, mewn dadansoddiad o ffeiliau Tŷ'r Cwmnïau mai Llandudno yw’r brif ddinas ar gyfer cychwyn busnes yn y DU. Hoffwn dalu teyrnged i’r entrepreneuriaid a’r busnesau am wireddu hynny. A wnaiff fy nghyfaill anrhydeddus y Gweinidog ymuno â mi yn Llandudno i gyfarfod rhai o’r entrepreneuriaid hynny i weld sut gallwn sicrhau eu bod yn blaguro, a throi Llandudno yn hwb twf a menter i ogledd Cymru?”
Gan ymateb yn gadarnhaol, dywedodd George Freeman, AS, Gweinidog y DU dros Wyddoniaeth, Ymchwil ac Arloesi:
“A phleser. Mae fy nghyfaill anrhydeddus yn gwneud pwynt pwysig: nid ar y cae rygbi ac ym maes twristiaeth yn unig y mae’r Ddraig Goch yn rhuo, gyda Llandudno yn serennu yn economaidd fel cyrchfan boblogaidd, ond mae hefyd yn ganolfan bwysig i wyddoniaeth, ymchwil ac arloesedd. Gyda choridor ynni gogledd Cymru, clwstwr gwyddoniaeth bywyd de Cymru, iechyd planhigion yn Aberystwyth, mae Cymru yn beiriant gwyddoniaeth ac arloesedd y bwriadwn ei chefnogi. Hoffwn dalu teyrnged i’w waith yn yr ardal, ac edrychaf ymlaen at ymweld â chlwstwr Llandudno fel rhan o’n gwaith yn cefnogi clystyrau ledled y DU.”
Yn dilyn y ddadl, dywedodd Robin:
“Rwy’n croesawu’r adroddiad, ond nid yw ei ganfyddiadau’n syndod i unrhyw un sy’n gyfarwydd â mentergarwch entrepreneuraidd Llandudno, a’r cymunedau ledled Aberconwy, wrth gwrs.”
Aeth Robin ymlaen i ddweud:
“Trwy gydol y Pandemig, mae Llywodraeth y DU wedi cynnig lefel ddigamsyniol o gefnogaeth i fusnesau wrth iddynt ymateb i Covid-19. Effeithiwyd ar dwristiaeth a lletygarwch, dau ddiwydiant sy’n ganolog i’n heconomi lleol, yn ddifrifol gan y pandemig, felly mae cefnogaeth ariannol Llywodraeth y DU wedi bod yn arbennig o bwysig i ni yma yn Aberconwy. Byddaf bob amser yn llwyr gefnogi diwydiant twristiaeth gogledd Cymru, ond yn sgil y pandemig, mae’n amlwg er mwyn i ni gryfhau ein heconomi leol, mae’n rhaid i ni ddatblygu eto ein cryfderau mewn twristiaeth, ond hefyd mae angen i ni arallgyfeirio gyda sectorau cyflenwol sy’n dod â swyddi sgiliau uchel newydd sy’n talu’n dda.”
I gloi, dywedodd Robin:
“Rydym yn gallu cynnig ansawdd bywyd ardderchog yma a all ddenu uwch-dechnoleg ac arloeswyr eraill. Rwy’n benderfynol o ddod â gwell mynediad band eang cyflym i Landudno ac i gymunedau ledled Aberconwy i alluogi’r dechnoleg y mae ar bawb o letygarwch i wasanaethau’r we ei hangen. Rwy’n edrych ymlaen at gydweithio â Llywodraeth y DU, busnesau a rhanddeiliaid i alluogi ein potensial entrepreneuraidd gan ddod â swyddi sgiliau uwch sy’n talu’n dda i Aberconwy.
