Ddydd Mawrth, aeth AS Aberconwy Robin Millar gydag Adrian Hughes o Amgueddfa’r Home Front yn Llandudno i dderbyniad Hyrwyddwyr Cyn-filwyr yn 10 Downing Street a drefnwyd gan y Gweinidog dros Faterion Cyn-filwyr, Johnny Mercer AS.
Roedd Adrian yn bresennol i gydnabod ei ddegawdau o waith gwirfoddol yn cefnogi cyn-filwyr ac yn cadw’r cof yn fyw am filwyr, awyrenwyr a morwyr o'r dref a fu farw mewn gwrthdaro.
Ers 2000, mae Adrian wedi cadw’r atgofion am hanes rhyfel Llandudno yn fyw drwy ei Amgueddfa’r Home Front ar Stryd Newydd – atyniad sy'n cael ei werthfawrogi gan drigolion ac ymwelwyr fel ei gilydd. Mae hefyd wedi helpu i dynnu sylw at arwriaeth y rhai a fu farw o’r dref drwy ei waith gwirfoddol gyda Chomisiwn Beddau Rhyfel y Gymanwlad, ac mae’n cefnogi cyn-filwyr y presennol drwy reoli Apêl y Pabi Lleng Brydeinig Frenhinol Llandudno.
Wrth sôn am y derbyniad, dywedodd Adrian:
"Er yn syndod, roeddwn yn falch iawn o dderbyn y gwahoddiad i fynychu derbyniad y
cyn-filwyr yn Downing Street ac i gwrdd â’r Gweinidog dros Gyn-filwyr. Roedd yn gyfle gwych i gwrdd â chyd-wirfoddolwyr o bob rhan o’r wlad ac i gyfnewid syniadau ar goffau’r rhai a fu farw er mwyn dangos hanes milwrol balch Llandudno.
“Diolch i Robin am ei ran yn hyn, ac fel rhywun sydd â diddordeb mewn hanes, roedd y daith o amgylch y Senedd yn fonws go iawn."
Yn dilyn y derbyniad, dywedodd Robin:
“Rydw i’n falch iawn bod ymrwymiad Adrian i gefnogi ein cyn-filwyr a’i angerdd am roi hanes diddorol Llandudno yn ystod y rhyfel ar gof a chadw wedi’i gydnabod gan y Prif Weinidog. Y llynedd, fe wnaeth Adrian fy nghyflwyno i rai o’n beddau rhyfel lleol. Mae ei wybodaeth am ein hanes milwrol a'i ymrwymiad i gofio’r rhai a fu farw, yn cael ei werthfawrogi’n fawr gan gynifer yn yr ardal. Byddwn yn argymell i drigolion ac ymwelwyr fel ei gilydd i achub ar y cyfle i ymuno ag Adrian ar un o’i deithiau – ac wrth gwrs, os nad ydyn nhw wedi gwneud yn barod, i ymweld â’i Amgueddfa’r Home Front.
“Mae cefnogi ein cyn-filwyr a chymunedau cryfach yn elfen ganolog o Ein Cynllun ar gyfer Aberconwy. Conwy sydd â’r gyfran uchaf o gyn-filwyr o blith holl siroedd Cymru a bu’n fraint go iawn cael cwrdd a gwrando ar gyn-filwyr ar draws Aberconwy. Mae gwaith elusennau lleol a grwpiau cymunedol fel y Lleng Brydeinig Frenhinol, y Blind Veterans ar gyfer cyn-filwyr dall, y Troop Café yn Llandudno a chlwb pêl-droed Military Minds FC yn rhyfeddol ac yn golygu cymaint i'r cyn-filwyr y maen nhw’n eu cefnogi.
“Rydw i’n falch bod fy Mil Aelod Preifat i gefnogi cyn-filwyr wedi symud yn ei flaen i’r camau olaf cyn derbyn Cydsyniad Brenhinol. Mae Llywodraeth y DU yn benderfynol o wneud y Deyrnas Unedig y lle gorau yn y byd i fod yn gyn-filwr, ac rwy’n falch iawn y bydd y Bil hwn yn helpu mewn ffordd fach i wireddu'r weledigaeth hon. Mae'n hwyluso’r broses o roi mwy o gymorth i fwy o gyn-filwyr ac mae’n rhoi’r hyblygrwydd i Weinidogion addasu’r cymorth sydd ar gael i gyn-filwyr wrth i amgylchiadau newid.”
Local Veterans Champion Adrian Hughes’ work recognised at Downing Street Reception
On Tuesday Aberconwy MP Robin Millar accompanied Adrian Hughes, of Llandudno’s Home Front Museum, to a Veteran Champions’ reception in 10 Downing Street hosted by the Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Johnny Mercer MP.
Adrian was attending in recognition of his decades of voluntary work supporting veterans and keeping alive the memory of soldiers, airmen and sailors from the town who have fallen in conflict.
Since 2000, Adrian has also kept the memories of Llandudno’s wartime history alive through his Home Front Museum on New Street – an attraction that is appreciated by residents and visitors alike. He has also helped to highlight the heroism of the town’s fallen through his voluntary work with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and he supports today’s veterans through managing Llandudno’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.
Commenting on the reception, Adrian said:
"Although a surprise, I was delighted to receive the invitation to attend the veterans' reception in Downing Street and to meet with the Minister for Veterans. It was a great opportunity to meet fellow volunteers from across the country and exchange ideas on commemorating the fallen and to showcase the proud military history of Llandudno.
“Thank you to Robin for his hand in this and for me, someone who is interested in history, the tour of Parliament was a real bonus."
Following the reception, Robin said:
“I’m delighted that Adrian’s commitment to supporting our veterans and passion for preserving Llandudno’s fascinating wartime history has been recognised by the Prime Minister. Last year Adrian introduced me to some of our local war graves. His knowledge of our military past, and his commitment for keeping alive the memories of our fallen, is greatly appreciated by so many in the area. I’d recommend to residents and visitors alike to seize the opportunity to join Adrian on one of his tours – and of course, if they haven’t done so already, to visit his Home Front Museum.
“Supporting our veterans and stronger communities is central to Our Plan for Aberconwy. Conwy has the highest proportion of veterans of any county in Wales and it has been a real privilege to meet and listen to veterans across Aberconwy. The work of local charities and community groups such as the Royal British Legion, Blind Veterans, Llandudno’s Troop Café and Military Minds FC is remarkable and means so much to the veterans they support.
“I am pleased that my Private Members’ Bill in support of veterans has now progressed to the final stages before receiving Royal Assent. This UK Government is determined to make the United Kingdom the best place in the world to be a veteran and I am proud that this Bill will help in a modest way to realise this vision. It facilitates the provision of more support to more veterans and it gives Ministers the flexibility to adapt support that is available to veterans as circumstances change.”
