Yesterday, Aberconwy MP Robin Millar signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment in Parliament. In doing so, he pledged his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day, honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust, and to paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people today.
This year marks 77 years since the liberation of the concentration camps of Europe and the end of the Second World War. Today, 27th January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, people across the globe will remember.
In the lead up to and on Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events have been arranged by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. The theme for this year’s commemorations is ‘One Day’.
After signing the Book of Commitment, Robin commented: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity for people from Aberconwy and, indeed, throughout the world, to reflect on the darkest times of European history. As the Holocaust moves from living history, to history, it becomes ever more important that we take the time to remember the six million Jewish victims and to pay tribute to the survivors.”
Continuing, Robin said: “In addition to the six million Jewish people murdered in the Holocaust we remember the millions of other lives taken by Nazi persecution. These groups include Roma and Sinti peoples, black, gay and mentally and physically disabled people. We also commemorate the genocides that have taken place since, in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.”
The United Kingdom 2022 Holocaust Memorial Day Ceremony will be broadcast this evening between 7pm and 8pm. Anyone can join in the commemorations by registering to watch the Ceremony here: https://www.hmd.org.uk/take-part-in-holocaust.../ukhmd
