Today is a day of overwhelming sadness for the people of Ukraine, for the international order and for peace and freedom loving peoples around the world – including the many millions of Russians who oppose the actions of their president and who will be in despair at the aggression being carried out in their name.
The significance of the invasion of Ukraine cannot be understated. For the first time since 1945 military conflict between states has returned to the continent of Europe. Without provocation Russia, a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, the organisation charged with maintaining international peace and security, has embarked on a military conquest of its neighbour.
Last month, in an article about the Russian miliary build-up, I stated that “history teaches us that appeasing aggression only fuels more aggression.” Now that President Putin has launched the invasion it is vital, to echo the words of the Prime Minister, that “we work with our allies to ensure that the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine is restored” and that further acts of international aggression are deterred.
I support the swift imposition of sanctions against the Russian regime. We must continue to support Ukraine militarily and we must be prepared to provide humanitarian aid to the potential influx of refugees into Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. And, as I wrote last month, we must continue to reinforce NATO forces in Eastern Europe and particularly in the Baltic States.
The United Kingdom has led the world in supporting Ukraine and throughout January “God Save the Queen” was trending on Ukrainian Twitter. Now, in their dark hour, the people of Ukraine must know that we are resolute in our support and that they will not be abandoned.
And it is crucial that we recognise this situation for what it is – the actions of a dictator that do not represent the will of the Russian people. Within living memory Russia herself has faced invasion and the Russian people know all too well the horrors and devastation that military conquest brings. Millions of people throughout Russia will share our despair and outrage at the actions of their president. I have lived in Russia and they are people just like us. They are passionate, creative, caring, thoughtful and hard working. They love their families and, like us, they want to live their lives in peace.

Datganiad ar y Goresgyniad yn Wcráin
Mae heddiw yn ddiwrnod o dristwch llethol i bobl Wcráin, i drefn ryngwladol ac i heddwch a rhyddid pobloedd y byd - gan gynnwys miliynau lawer o bobl Rwsia sy’n gwrthwynebu gweithredoedd eu harlywydd ac sydd mewn anobaith oherwydd yr ymddygiad ymosodol sy’n cael ei gyflawni yn eu henw .
Ni ellir tan ddatgan arwyddocâd yr ymosodiad ar Wcráin. Am y tro cyntaf ers 1945, mae gwrthdaro milwrol rhwng gwladwriaethau wedi dychwelyd i gyfandir Ewrop. Heb eu pryfocio mae Rwsia sy’n aelod parhaol o Gyngor Diogelwch y Cenhedloedd Unedig, y sefydliad sy’n gyfrifol am gynnal heddwch a diogelwch rhyngwladol, wedi cychwyn ar goncwest filwrol yn erbyn ei gymydog.
Fis diwethaf, soniais mewn erthygl a oedd yn cyfeirio at Rwsia yn adeiladu ei rhengoedd milwrol bod “ hanes yn ein dysgu bod tawelu ymosodedd ond yn ysgogi mwy o ymddygiad ymosodol” Gan fod Arlywydd Putin bellach wedi lansio’r ymosodiad, mae’n hanfodol, i adleisio geiriau’r Prif Weinidog “ein bod yn cydweithio â’n cynghreiriaid i sicrhau adferiad o sofraniaeth ac annibyniaeth Wcráin”, a bod gweithredoedd ymosodol rhyngwladol pellach yn cael eu hatal.
Rwyf yn cefnogi gosod sancsiynau ar frys yn erbyn cyfundrefn Rwsia. Rhaid i ni barhau i gefnogi Wcráin yn filwrol, a rhaid i ni fod yn barod i ddarparu cymorth dyngarol i’r mewnlifiad posib o ffoaduriaid i Wlad Pwyl, Slofacia a Rwmania. Ac, fel yr ysgrifennais fis diwethaf, rhaid i ni barhau i atgyfnerthu grymoedd NATO yn Nwyrain Ewrop, yn enwedig y Gwledydd Baltig.
Mae’r DU wedi arwain y byd yn eu cefnogaeth i Wcráin a thrwy gydol mis Ionawr roedd “God Save the Queen” yn trendio ar Twitter Wcráin. Yn eu hawr dduaf, rhaid i bobl Wcráin wybod ein bod yn un â hwy yn ein cefnogaeth, ac na fyddwn yn cefnu arnynt.
Mae’n hanfodol i ni sylweddoli’r sefyllfa fel y mae - nad yw gweithredoedd unben ychwaith yn cynrychioli ewyllys pobl Rwsia. Mae Rwsia ei hun wedi wynebu ymosodiad ac mae pobl Rwsia yn gwybod yn iawn yr erchylltra a’r dinistr sy’n deillio o goncwest milwrol. Mae miliynau o bobl ledled Rwsia yn rhannu ein hanobaith a’n dicter am weithredoedd eu Harlywydd. Rydw i wedi byw yn Rwsia, a phobl fel chi a fi ydynt. Maent yn bobl angerddol, greadigol, gofalgar, meddylgar ac yn gweithio’n galed. Maent yn caru eu teuluoedd, ac fel ninnau, am fyw bywyd mewn heddwch.
