The last fortnight has passed in a whirl. Parliament returned after the short break between the 2020/21 session and returned on 10th May ready for the 2021/2022 session.
The return is marked by the State Opening of Parliament which I was fortunate enough to have obtained a ticket to. This was by ballot for very limited spaces and I was thrilled to be a winner. I saw the State Opening last year but I suspect in all the whirl of the General Election, entering Parliament that it passed me by in a blur! This year was very different than normal but no less spectacular. Although the Queen was in day dress with a matching lilac hat, the Imperial State Crown was there, presented on a cushion. What a fabulous object this crown is. It was created for the coronation of the Queen’s grandfather – George IV in 1937. I noticed the sparkling of the diamonds on the crown which I suppose is no surprise as there are 2868 of them as well as 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds and 269 pearls. (If you are interested in learning more about this crown and others used by the Queen there is more information on the Royal Collection Trust website.)
My viewing position was in part of the Palace called the Royal Gallery. It is a great space (actually the largest room in the Palace of Westminster) with two enormous paintings, one on each long wall. They depict scenes from the Napoleonic Wars; the death of Nelson at Trafalgar and the Battle of Waterloo. From this terrific setting I had a birds eye view of the procession to the Lords, after Black Rod had summoned the “commoners” to listen to the Queen’s address.
These traditions and ceremonies are important. They reflect our history and show the components that have constructed our democracy. It was an honour and a privilege to be there and be part of that ceremonial, albeit in an observing role.
The debate on the Queens Speech follows the State Opening and so on 19th May I chose the debate on health to make my maiden speech in Parliament. It was a very different experience to be “addressing” the House rather than asking a question. I was delighted to be able to pay tribute to my predecessor Guto Bebb, talk about Aberconwy and its heritage and beauty and also thank you the people of Aberconwy for the personal honour and great privilege you have given to me by electing me your Member of Parliament.
It was quite a surreal moment when Angela Rayner from the Labour party in the summing up of this section of the debate said “Even as a granny, I cannot match the lifetime of commitment to politics shown by the hon. Member for Aberconwy (Robin Millar). We have been on opposite sides of the many campaigns that he has fought, but his love of Wales and the beautiful coastline of his constituency are sentiments that I am sure the whole House will share.” I was surprised.
You continue to keep me well grounded writing and emailing on a broad range of subjects. The last fortnight has been dominated by your opinions on the conflict in Israel, some of the announcements in the Queens Speech particularly Voter ID and of course, animal sentience. I can only condemn the violence on both sides in Israel and am pleased that this week has seen the announcement of a ceasefire.

Nub News – 21 Mai
Mae’r pythefnos diwethaf wedi mynd heibio fel y gwynt. Dychwelodd y Senedd ar ôl toriad byr rhwng sesiwn 2020/21 gan ddychwelyd ar 10 Mai yn barod ar gyfer sesiwn 2021/2022.
Mae’r digwyddiad yn cael ei ddynodi gan Agoriad Swyddogol y Senedd, yr oeddwn yn ffodus o gael tocyn i fynd iddo. Trefnwyd hynny drwy bleidlais ar gyfer llefydd cyfyngedig iawn, ac roeddwn wrth fy modd fy mod wedi ennill. Gwelais yr Agoriad Swyddogol y llynedd, ond rwy’n amau bod holl fwrlwm yr Etholiad Cyffredinol ac ennill lle yn y Senedd wedi golygu mai brith gof sydd gen i o’r cyfan! Roedd eleni yn wahanol iawn i’r arfer, ond nid oedd yn llai trawiadol o gwbl. Er bod y Frenhines mewn gwisg ddydd gyda het lelog gydweddus, roedd Coron y Wladwriaeth Ymerodrol yno ar glustog. Mae’r goron hon yn rhyfeddol. Fe’i crëwyd ar gyfer coroni taid y Frenhines - Siôr IV yn 1937. Sylwais ar ddisgleirdeb y diemwntau ar y goron, sydd yn fawr o syndod mae’n debyg, oherwydd mae yna 2868 ohonynt, yn ogystal â 17 saffir, 11 emrallt a 269 o berlau. (Os oes gennych ddiddordeb mewn dysgu mwy am y goron hon a rhai eraill a ddefnyddir gan y Frenhines, mae yna fwy o wybodaeth ar gael ar wefan Ymddiriedolaeth y Casgliad Brenhinol.)
Roeddwn i wedi fy lleoli mewn rhan o’r Palas a elwir yn Oriel Frenhinol. Mae’n lle hyfryd (yr ystafell fwyaf ym Mhalas San Steffan mewn gwirionedd) gyda dau beintiad anferth, un ar bob wal hir. Maent yn darlunio golygfeydd o’r Rhyfeloedd Napoleonaidd; marwolaeth Nelson yn Nhrafalgar a Brwydr Waterloo. O’r lleoliad anfarwol yma roedd gennyf olygfa oddi fry o’r orymdaith i Dŷ’r Arglwyddi, ar ôl i Black Rod wysio’r “cyffredin” i wrando ar araith y Frenhines.
Mae’r traddodiadau a’r seremonïau yma yn bwysig. Maent yn adlewyrchu ein hanes ac yn dangos y cydrannau sydd wedi adeiladu ein democratiaeth. Roedd yn fraint ac yn anrhydedd bod yno a bod yn rhan o’r seremoni, er bod hynny mewn rôl o arsylwi.
Mae’r ddadl ar Araith y Frenhines yn dilyn yr Agoriad Swyddogol, ac felly ar 19 Mai dewisais y ddadl ar iechyd i roi fy araith gyntaf yn y Senedd. Roedd “cyfarch” y Tŷ yn brofiad gwahanol iawn i ofyn cwestiwn. Roeddwn yn falch o allu talu teyrnged i fy rhagflaenydd Guto Bebb, i siarad am Aberconwy a’i threftadaeth a’i harddwch a hefyd i ddiolch i chi, bobl Aberconwy, am y fraint bersonol a’r anrhydedd fawr yr ydych wedi ei rhoi i mi drwy fy ethol fel eich Aelod Seneddol.
Roedd yn foment eithaf swreal pan ddywedodd Angela Rayner o’r Blaid Lafur wrth grynhoi y rhan hon o’r ddadl “Hyd yn oed fel nain, nid wyf wedi ymrwymo cymaint o fy oes i wleidyddiaeth fel y mae’r Aelod Anrhydeddus dros Aberconwy wedi ei wneud (Robin Millar). Rydym wedi bod ar ochrau gwahanol mewn nifer o ymgyrchoedd y mae wedi bod yn rhan ohonynt, ond mae ei gariad at Gymru ac arfordir hyfryd ei etholaeth yn deimladau rwy’n siŵr y bydd y Tŷ cyfan yn eu rhannu.” Roeddwn wedi fy synnu.
Rydych yn parhau i gadw fy nhraed ar y ddaear drwy ysgrifennu ac e-bostio am ystod eang o bynciau. Mae’r pythefnos diwethaf wedi cael ei meddiannu gan eich safbwyntiau ar y gwrthdaro yn Israel, rhai o’r cyhoeddiadau yn Araith y Frenhines, yn arbennig ID Pleidleiswyr, ac wrth gwrs, ymdeimlad anifeiliaid. Gallaf ond condemnio’r trais ar y ddwy ochr yn Israel, ac rwyf yn falch y cyhoeddwyd cadoediad.
Os oes gennych unrhyw faterion yr hoffech eu trafod gyda mi, neu broblem yr ydych yn meddwl y gallaf eich helpu gyda hi, codwch y ffôn os gwelwch yn dda. Gallwch ffonio fy swyddfa ar 01492 583094 neu fy e-bostio yn robin.millar.mp@parliament.uk
