9th October 2021 – Bookshop Day
Bookshop Day
Celebrating Bookshops Big and Small
Launched in 2016, Bookshop Day 2021 takes place on Saturday 9 October. Booksellers, publishers, authors, illustrators and poets work collaboratively on the campaign to encourage consumers to shop in their local bookshop and ensure their high street is thriving. Participating retailers include Waterstones, Foyles, WHSmith, Blackwell’s and numerous independent bookshops. Bookshop Day is part of Books Are My Bag, the consumer-facing campaign run by the Booksellers Association to celebrate and promote bookshops in the UK and Ireland.
We have some great bookshops in Aberconwy – some small independent ones, some specialist ones, some large retailers and even a delightful bookshop in Dolgarrog that allows books to go “thereandback” allowing them a new lease of life.
Our spectacular landscape and environment attract many artists to live and work in the area inspired by that natural beauty and so we have poets and writers amongst us. Some professional and some who write purely for the joy of writing.
Literacy is an important skill and one that opens pathways to knowledge and alternative worlds. It is a rewarding pastime and an easy one to enjoy. The equipment is generally light and very portable!
So indulge your love of books on Saturday. Go out and visit your local bookshop. Engage on social media - what are you buying and where did you buy it? Share pictures of your bookshop purchases on social media, tag the bookshop you bought them from, tag @booksaremybag and use #ChooseBookshops. This is a great opportunity to shout about our favourite books and bookshops! Robin will be out and about touching base with some of our bookshops…. See you there!
