I am saddened that children are still being caught up in this continuing refugee crisis, and I appreciate the strength of feeling expressed, however, the focus of the legislation was on implementing the deal as agreed with the EU so that the Withdrawal Agreement could have effect in UK law.
Accepting child refugees risks encouraging parents to send them and there are significant dangers that exposes the children to. It is also not a final result as they will often, understandably, go on to seek reconciliation as a family, in another country.
The Conservative governments has a strong track record of receiving refugees - including children. Indeed, it has resettled more refugees in this way than any other European nation since 2016.
I believe it is better to prevent the separation in the first place and better to deal with this issue within a separate Immigration Bill, which I look forward to the opportunity of contributing to in the future.
Mae’n fy nigalonni bod plant yn dal yn cael eu tynnu i mewn i’r argyfwng ffoaduriaid sy’n parhau i fynd rhagddo, ac rydw i’n gwerthfawrogi’r teimladau cryf sy’n cael eu mynegi ynglŷn â hyn. Fodd bynnag, bwriad y ddeddfwriaeth oedd gweithredu’r cytundeb yn unol â’r hyn y cytunwyd arno â’r DU er mwyn sicrhau y gallai’r Cytundeb Ymadael gael ei rhoi ar waith yng nghyfraith y DU. Nid oeddwn yn credu ei bod yn briodol ychwanegu diwygiadau newydd.
Doedd y diwygiadau a gynigiwyd ddim ond yn annog masnachu pobl, gyda phlant yn cael eu hanfon ar eu pen eu hunain cyn eu teuluoedd, yn llawn ofn ac mewn perygl, er mwyn rhoi llwybr i’w teuluoedd ei ddilyn.
Mae gan lywodraethau Ceidwadol hanes cryf o dderbyn ffoaduriaid – gan gynnwys plant. Mae wedi adsefydlu mwy o ffoaduriaid yn y modd hwn nag unrhyw wlad arall yn Ewrop ers 2016.
Rydw i’n credu ei bod yn well atal teuluoedd rhag cael eu gwahanu yn y lle cyntaf, a delio â'r mater hwn mewn Bil Mewnfudo ar wahân, ac rydw i’n edrych ymlaen at gael cyfle i gyfrannu at hwnnw yn y dyfodol.
